A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the country's president.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
