Our planet could be facing challenges, however a sense of hope remains. A novel accolade originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus aims to motivate the public to make a difference.

The medal will honor in memory of the renowned scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It seeks to acknowledge individuals and groups that advocate for the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

The inaugural winners will be revealed at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year.

According to statements that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had backed the medal's establishment. “The idea behind this award, and the festival being tasked with organising it, is Jane’s,” a representative said. “She expressed she would like this to happen. This is likely because of the close connection she had with the festival.”

“The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will acknowledge enduring projects undertaken to create a planet improved for people, animals and the environment and offer support for the continuation such efforts,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of Starmus indicated that the medal – unveiled at a prestigious venue – would probably encompass various fields.

“The intent is for it to be very much similar to the Stephen Hawking award for science communication established a decade past,” he explained. Goodall was an honoree of that very medal.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, one figure remarked, “Honestly, it is difficult to feel hopeful. Present governance in one major nation represents an assault on knowledge. This situation undermines the world’s efforts.”

“Realistically, the situation appears particularly bright which means we need to commence reflecting, more deeply about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not just climate change, that’s the whole way that we treat the natural world.”

Inspiring Change

As a result, it was noted it was a good time to emulate her guiding principles. “I think that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this essential spirit that Jane embodied – which made her priority, to change how we regard wildlife around us.”

Another key issue today was highlighted of disinformation. The central topic of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“We realised that truth has become a subject of discussion where political interests is involved. And it’s a perilous development,” it was said. “The science of climate is a science; you cannot allow interference from politics in climate science.”

Hope and Determination

The goal remains that this honor will inspire concrete steps. “The purpose is encouraging people to participate and to show concern and to strive toward these goals, really. Regardless of if we feel hopeful, we have to look at working our utmost,” a statement concluded. “Accept the possibility of setbacks, but you still continue striving toward success.”

A descendant engaged in conservation work shared optimism that “given direction and when empowered, people are capable of being conscientious guardians of our planet”, citing the programs of an institute that, in addition to its projects, empowers the youth get involved locally, wildlife, and environment.

“As Jane Goodall repeatedly told everyone, our daily actions are significant and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we make,” it was stated. “It is not too late and this medal will offer support and raise awareness about the positive actions that are being undertaken.”
