Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky Stays Guarded on Cruise Missile Negotiations with Trump After Washington Summit

Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky appears to have departed from a Washington summit empty-handed after failing to obtain the long-desired Tomahawk cruise missiles from President Donald Trump.

Zelensky stated after the cordial bilateral that both leaders had discussed advanced missile systems, but decided not to make statements on that topic "because the United States does not want an escalation."

President Trump's Position on Weapons Transfer

While the US president did not rule out supplying the missiles to the Ukrainian forces, his tone during the White House discussions was cautious.

"With hope Ukraine won't require them, hopefully we'll be able to end the conflict without thinking about Tomahawks," Trump remarked, noting that America required the missile systems for its own defense.

Trump said that sending the missiles would be "an escalation, but discussions will continue."

Global Diplomatic Developments

The Trump-Zelensky meeting occurred just a day after President Trump held telephone discussions with President Vladimir Putin and agreed to hold face-to-face talks in Hungary in the near future.

Following the discussions, Trump used social media to call for Ukraine and Moscow to "cease current positions" and end the war.

Kyiv's Perspective and Suggestions

The Ukrainian leader proposed that his country could provide unmanned aerial vehicles in exchange for the missile systems, a suggestion that elicited positive reactions from Trump.

Zelensky also complimented his counterpart on his role in achieving a peace deal in the Middle East, implying that the US leader could capitalize on that success to help end the conflict in his country.

Future Negotiations and Considerations

Questioned about whether the possibility of Ukrainian forces obtaining Tomahawks had prompted the Russian president to agree to meet Trump, Zelensky answered, "It's unclear," noting that the idea had caused Moscow to be "afraid since it is a powerful military asset."

When questioned if he was leaving the US capital more optimistic that Ukraine would receive the missiles, he stated, "My approach is realistic."

Zelensky believes that using these missiles to target Russian oil and energy facilities would severely weaken Putin's war economy.

Personal Consequences of the War

"Truth and democracy will prevail, and all the terrorism and evil will disappear," said one local businessman. "We simply wish to exist peacefully, we don't want to give up, we only desire to be left in peace."

The emotional response emerged as residents in Kyiv persist in rebuild their lives and businesses damaged by ongoing military strikes.

Ongoing Peace Process

In recent days, the US president had shown an willingness to the concept of providing the missile systems, even as the Russian leader warned that such a decision would further strain the US-Russian relationship.

Trump had anticipated that a personal meeting in the US state in last summer would help convince the Russian president to begin comprehensive peace talks to resolve the conflict, but that summit failed to produce a decisive breakthrough.

The leaders currently arranging for further discussions as the conflict in Ukraine persists to develop.
